OpenAI Turns ChatGPT Ads Into Sponsored Agent Conversations

OpenAI is turning ChatGPT advertising into an interactive commercial channel rather than a display format. Sponsored Agents let users continue from an ad into a business-funded conversation, while campaign tools and integrations automate more marketing work. The opportunity is significant, but so is the need for unmistakable separation between assistance and persuasion.

Sponsored Agents Extend an Ad Into a Conversation

In its product announcement, OpenAI said Sponsored Agents are being tested with selected advertisers in the United States. After seeing a relevant ad, a user can opt into a clearly labelled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, ask detailed questions and follow a link to the advertiser’s website when ready.

OpenAI says the sponsored conversation is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the user’s original conversation. That design is central to trust. A shopper may value an agent that can explain dimensions, availability or product care, but must understand when information is shaped by the seller. The distinction builds on OpenAI’s earlier expansion of ChatGPT advertising and its later European ad rollout.

Campaign Management Moves Into Natural Language

Advertisers can use an Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT Work to create, update and analyse campaigns through prompts. A website or brief can become a campaign, while the system can explain performance and recommend next steps. Inside Ads Manager, AI can suggest copy and imagery based on a landing page and campaign objective, with advertisers reviewing and editing the output before use.

OpenAI is also offering optional text customization that adapts existing headlines and descriptions to the context of a conversation and translates them into a user’s preferred language. This reduces production work but creates a governance challenge: every generated variation still needs to remain accurate, compliant and consistent with approved claims. The operating model resembles the automated workflows discussed in Business 2.0’s analysis of AI-native companies.

HubSpot and Shopify Connect Ads to Business Data

HubSpot is OpenAI’s first CRM partner and Shopify its first ecommerce partner for ChatGPT Ads. The integrations are intended to bring campaign activity into tools businesses already use instead of creating another isolated marketing console. This could simplify audience management, product promotion and follow-up when an ad produces a lead or sale.

OpenAI has introduced conversion and pixel-based measurement, alongside additional ways to purchase inventory, in its explanation of new ChatGPT ad-buying tools. Connecting advertising, CRM and commerce data can improve attribution, but it also raises questions about consent, data minimization and access permissions. Plugin governance will matter for the same reasons covered in the industry’s agent-plugin standard.

Trust Depends on Labels, Privacy and Claim Quality

OpenAI says its advertising principles remain unchanged. Its separate advertising terms restrict how reporting data may be used and define advertiser responsibilities. Those policies become more consequential when an ad can answer follow-up questions dynamically rather than displaying fixed, pre-approved text.

Regulators will still judge the resulting claims as advertising. The US Federal Trade Commission’s advertising guidance requires truthful, non-deceptive claims supported by evidence, while the Interactive Advertising Bureau publishes operational standards for digital advertising. Businesses need logs of generated responses, escalation routes and limits preventing sponsored agents from inventing product capabilities, prices or guarantees.

OpenAI Is Building a Full Advertising Platform

Industry analysis from Search Engine Land notes that OpenAI has been assembling familiar advertising infrastructure around self-service campaign management, buying, conversion optimization, measurement and targeting. Sponsored Agents provide the format that is native to ChatGPT: conversation rather than a list of sponsored links.

The business case is stronger engagement and qualified intent. The risk is that personalization makes commercial influence less obvious precisely when it becomes more useful. OpenAI must preserve clear labels, user choice and separation from independent responses as the platform scales. The challenge resembles the control problem examined in Microsoft’s enterprise-agent guidance. Conversational advertising will succeed only if users can always identify who is speaking and why.
