Mahindra has become the first Indian automaker to embed a Google Cloud AI agent into a production vehicle, announcing TEQ_Talk on India's Independence Day — a conversational voice assistant built on Gemini Enterprise that controls more than 200 car functions through natural language in the new BE 6 SPORTEQ series.

From Pre-Programmed Commands to Conversational Intent

Every automotive voice assistant before TEQ_Talk has operated on the same fundamental constraint: the driver must learn the system's vocabulary. Say the command exactly right, or the car does nothing. Gemini Enterprise integrated into Mahindra's MAIA (Mahindra's Artificial Intelligence Architecture) platform removes that constraint entirely. MAIA is engineered to understand natural, conversational human intent rather than fixed command strings — meaning the driver communicates with the car the way they would with a person rather than a device.

The practical difference is significant. When a driver says "it's a little cold in here," the system does not wait for a climate-control command phrase — it infers intent from context, determines whether to raise the cabin temperature, reduce the air conditioning or open a window based on current conditions, and acts. Ask to see the sun or the stars, and the sunroof opens. The system connects real-time vehicle sensor data with the driver's personal context and conversational history to respond appropriately rather than literally. Sashikumar Sreedharan, Managing Director of Google Cloud India, was present at the Mahindra launch event — a signal of the strategic significance the partnership carries for Google Cloud's automotive ambitions in the Asia-Pacific region.

TEQ_Talk — What 200 Functions Actually Means in Practice

Two hundred vehicle functions under conversational AI control is a substantially wider surface than any previous production automotive AI system has attempted. TEQ_Talk covers climate management — temperature, fan speed, seat heating and cooling — alongside lighting control, window and sunroof operation, media playback and queue management, and live weather integration that enables context-aware suggestions. Navigation operates through conversational route planning: describe where you want to go and under what conditions, and the system builds the route. The vehicle's entire owner's manual is accessible on demand through natural language queries — eliminating the need to search through physical or digital documentation while driving.

The system also functions as a proactive co-pilot rather than a reactive assistant. By combining real-time vehicle telemetry with personal context, TEQ_Talk can surface relevant information before the driver asks — alerting to conditions the driver may not have noticed, suggesting maintenance actions based on vehicle data, or adapting preferences learned from prior journeys. This agentic behaviour — acting on inferred intent rather than waiting for explicit commands — is the same architectural pattern that the Ryanair–Google Cloud Gemini Enterprise deployment uses for crew logistics. TEQ_Talk is effectively the consumer-facing instantiation of that same agentic AI infrastructure applied to the individual driving experience.

The BE 6 SPORTEQ Package — BaaS and a Three-Screen Cockpit

TEQ_Talk is one of six TEQ Suites in the BE 6 SPORTEQ's digital cockpit — a coast-to-coast three-screen layout that replaces the traditional instrument cluster and infotainment screen with a continuous display surface. The vehicle also introduces Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), a financing model that separates battery ownership from vehicle ownership and enables the BE 6 SPORTEQ to start at ₹11.45 lakh with battery costs billed at ₹3.75 per kilometre. For a market where battery cost represents a significant portion of EV sticker price, BaaS materially reduces the entry point and aligns the buyer's cost with actual usage rather than amortised ownership. The BE 6 SPORTEQ is an electric SUV — TEQ_Talk is therefore being deployed in a vehicle where the powertrain and infotainment systems are already deeply integrated digitally, making agentic AI control architecturally simpler than it would be in a traditional combustion-engine platform.

India as Google Cloud's Automotive AI Proving Ground

The timing of the announcement — India's Independence Day, August 15 — is not incidental. Mahindra is one of India's most prominent automotive manufacturers, and the BE 6 SPORTEQ is positioned as a flagship technology statement. Choosing to debut the country's first production Gemini-powered vehicle on Independence Day frames the partnership as a national technology milestone as much as a product launch.
